WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INTERPRETER AND A TRANSLATOR?
A translator converts written text from one language to another while an interpreter works with spoken and signed language. Translation and interpretation represent two separate, but complementary professions. Interpret Easy provides both interpretation and translation services.
WHAT KIND OF ORGANIZATIONS NEED INTERPRETERS AND TRANSLATORS?
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 Mandates that any organization that received federal funding provide meaningful access to those with limited-English. For example, healthcare organizations that receive federal funding through Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement and provide care to limited English patients are mandated to utilize the services qualified medical interpreters and translators.
CAN BILINGUAL FAMILY MEMBERS OR STAFF SERVE AS INTERPRETERS?
In healthcare settings, bilingual family members and staff are not legally qualified as interpreters outside of rare circumstances, such as emergencies. The use of unqualified interpreters in medicine and law can increase the risk of preventable errors and poses a risk to harm limited-English individuals who are seeking healthcare or justice. The definition of "qualified interpreter" is given by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
